What does "rolling" mean?
Rolling or "Eskimo Rolling" a kayak is a way to stay in your boat and right it when it flips. It's a great technique for anyone who paddles and it's especially important to know how to roll if you're running class III or above whitewater or if you're sea kayaking in places where rescue is difficult.
Rolling seems mysterious if you haven't done it before, but it's just a series of coordinated motions you do in your boat when you're underwater. Rolling doesn't require great strength or flexibility; it's one of those skills where technique outperforms strength every time!
The best way to learn to roll is to take a class in either a pool during the winter or spring or in a pond during the summer. Having an instructor who can take you through a series of progressive drills is the easiest and quickest way to learn.
